Two fishermen drowned Monday after falling off from their fishing boat and drowned in Rari beach in Lake Victoria.
Police in Kisumu County reported the incident and said that the search for the bodies has already kicked off.
The victims Lucas Obonyo and Stephen Ochieng’ aged 19 and 20 respectively were on a fishing expedition.
Unconfirmed sources claim that the two boys met their unfortunate death in the murky waters because they were not donning lifesaving jackets to manage the lethal raging water. The coastguard rescue team has been called in to assist in the retrieval exercise.
Confirming the incident, Kisumu County Police Commander Samuel Anampiu said that the bodies are yet to be retrieved and the progress report on the incident will follow.
“The incident occurred at about 500 meters off the shore of Rari beach in the lake. The bodies are yet to be retrieved,” disclosed Anampiu.
He said the two teenagers who drowned were on their usual activity of fishing to get their daily bread when they met their death.
“These young boys perhaps were going about fishing without the necessary lifesaving jackets as it has been the habit of some fishermen in the lakeside,” he added.
Anampiu further urged the fishermen to stop assuming the importance of having lifesaving jackets while fishing since it is a way of endangering their lives.
