Two killed in Kerugoya inferno

Two people lost their lives after a fire razed down a residential structure in Kerugoya town in Kirinyaga County.

A child and a man believed to be drunk when the fire broke out suffered fatal burns after they were consumed by the raging flames during the Friday evening tragedy.

Witnesses said the fire started at around 9:30 pm before it spread to the residential houses where the child and the man were apparently asleep.

“A man who was reportedly too drunk to escape from the unfolding tragedy was burned beyond recognition while a child who was left behind by her mother also died in the inferno as nobody was aware he was still inside until his mother arrived and notified the public but was too later.

Macharia Stephen, one of the affected residents told the press that the police carried the two bodies to Kerugoya Level 5 Morgue

It was not clear what caused the fire but victims pointed to possible gas explosion in one of the rooms that claimed goods including machines worth millions.

“I have lost everything worth millions including public address system and screens for hire, I only manage to safe my family,” Macharia said.

Another resident, Bernard Kinyua, said they did what was possible to rescue their items and people who were already asleep but the fire was too huge.

The local fire brigade arrived at the scene but could not access the area due to a lack of access routes to the scene of the incident.
