TSC ease teacher-pupil ratio in Tharaka-Nithi

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is recruiting additional primary and secondary school teachers in Tharaka Nithi County to increase the teacher-pupil ratio.

Speaking to KNA during a documents’ verification exercise for primary school teachers, who had applied online held at Tharaka Boy’s Secondary School, Wednesday, the TSC Sub- County Director for Tharaka North and South Sub-counties, Ms. Mary Muraya, assured that the recruitment exercise will be free and fair to all applicants.

“We have 66 slots for the whole County and each of the five Sub-counties has been allocated thirteen, with the remaining one slot to be given to the Sub-county with the highest number of applicants,” said Ms. Muraya.

She said the teachers who have prior experience as interns will have added advantage of being recruited, but was quick to add that, this category of applicants was minimal and many other applicants still stood a good chance.

The TSC Sub-county Director revealed that the major exercise yesterday was to verify that the documents attached to the online application were true copies of the originals, besides filling in the gaps in case any of the required documents were missing from the documents online attachments.

Ms. Muraya further disclosed that all the applicants who turned up for the verification exercise were not in vain because the verified documents would be maintained by the TSC as a basis for future recruitments, whenever the County is allocated additional slots for the future recruitments employment.

She said the recruitment comes in handy with the Covid-19 Ministry of Health protocols, which require social distancing and hence additional teachers, to ensure the teacher-pupil contact is not compromised.

The other three Sub-counties in Tharaka Nithi are Meru-South, Igambang’ombe, and Maara. Similar exercises were being held in the Sub-counties at the same time.

The documents verification exercise for secondary school teachers in the County will kick-off, tomorrow, July 22, 2021.

Early this year, the Government extended contracts of some teachers employed last year and recruited more to increase the teachers-pupils contact and to allow the requisite social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This will enable a better learning environment in public schools in the County.

In January this year, TSC extended the contracts of 47 teachers and recruited 124 new teachers to be deployed to needy schools in Tharaka-Nithi County to allow students to observe the requisite social distancing as the schools resumed to full capacity.

Tharaka-Nithi TSC Director, Abukar Hassan, disclosed that the government had extended the contracts of 23 primary school and 24 secondary school teachers who had been recruited for the year 2020 and assigned new contracts for 55 primary schools and 69 secondary school teachers in the County.
