Senator Moi calls for prosecution of those responsible for the stalled Kirandich Phase II

Baringo senator Gideon Moi has hit out at individuals behind the stalled Sh.1.8 billion Kirandich dam phase II in Baringo Central Sub-County.

The senator said any individual found to have contributed to the failure of the mega-project which seeks to benefit more than 65,000 people in Baringo Central and North Sub Counties, will face the full force of the law.

The Baringo senator who is also KANU chairman noted that such projects meant to transform the livelihoods of the people must be jealously guarded by all means.

Speaking during a Sunday service at AIC Kabarnet town church, Moi said that it was unfortunate that the multi-billion project is still dragging at a time when the residents would have benefited through provisions of safe and clean water for their domestic use.

He said that he will team up with other leaders from the county in getting to the root cause for the delay. “This is unacceptable and it is not our intention as leaders that the project delays,” he said.

Speaking in the same Service, Kabarnet Ward MCA Earnest Kibet said the project which is financed and undertaken by the National government through the department of water should have been complete by now, to ease water and sanitation problems facing the would-be beneficiaries.

Kibet cited a case where a group of abattoir operators a week ago threatened to slaughter their livestock outside the gate of governor Stanley Kiptis offices in Kabarnet due to an acute shortage of water at their facility.

He said that the same has culminated in households missing water frequently due to mechanical challenges occasioned by the only running pumping machine at the dam.

“Without water, we cannot take a bath before we come to church, neither are we able to cook our food without the precious commodity since it is crucial in all aspects of our lives,” he said.

Kibet noted that the stalled project was problematic since even the local leaders are unable to give conclusive answers, thus he wants the matter to be addressed once and for all.

The construction of Kirandich Dam phase II project was commissioned by the late president Daniel Arap Moi in the year 2001 to help alleviate the decade-long water shortage experienced in Kabarnet town.

Phase two of the projects encompass the development of sewerage system and waste management for Kabarnet town and extension of distribution of pipelines and water tanks to cover Kituro, Kitumbei, Kaptorokwo, Kasoiyo to Kabasis and from Ngolong, Seretunin, and Kabartonjo.

The phase also includes hydropower that is set to solve the challenge of high electricity bills, which has led to the interruption of water supply due to disconnection by Kenya Power.

Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social protection Simon Chelugui in a recent event said that the second phase construction of the Kirandich dam is set to face further delays due to a conditional grant which has tied contractors to the financier.

Chelugui who was Water CS at the time of the project negotiation three years ago has since said that it is imperative to vary the conditional grant to allow the government to hire contractors in order to fast track its implementation.
