Police in Mombasa County have assured the family of Abdulhakim Sagar that their lost relative who was suspected to have been abducted by unknown people in Mombasa Old Town is safe under police custody.
This is after the family of Mr. Sagar matched for justice following their complaints of alleged abduction of their relative who went missing on Wednesday last week.
Coast Regional Commissioner Mr. John Elungata told the family that was led by Faris Sagar, the brother to the victim that Sagar was safe adding he was not abducted but arrested.
Four years ago, Sagar was arrested and charged with recruiting young boys in to terrorism groups. However, he was released for lack of sufficient evidence.
He was rearrested on Wednesday 18, 2021 at Mombasa Old Town in relation to the same case.
Addressing the media, Mombasa Senator Mohammed Fakii who had accompanied the family confirmed that Mr. Abdulhakim Sagar, 40, was indeed arrested by police and he would be arraigned in court as per the law.
At the same time, Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has asked police to ensure they introduce themselves when arresting suspected criminals to prevent family members from thinking that their loved ones had been abducted.
“Cases of enforced disappearance have been reported in the Coast region, no wonder people get scared at the slightest missing of their relatives. To avoid this, police should at least inform a family member on where they are taking a particular criminal whom they have arrested,” said Ali.
Ali added that the law was clear that a suspected criminal cannot be held in custody for more than 24 hours without being arraigned before court.
The finding out of the whereabouts of Mr. Sagar has come up as a relief to the family since they were threatening to hold demonstrations in regards to his disappearance.
