Rape victim transferred to safety

KNA  A 12-year-old girl who was gang raped by two men in Loosuk Division, in Samburu West Sub-county was on Monday transferred to a safe shelter following the intervention of the National Gender and Equality Commission.

The minor was discharged from the Samburu County Referral Hospital, Friday, last week where she had been admitted after the brutal attack.

National Gender and Equality Commission Chairperson, Dr. Joyce Mutinda, led a high-powered security delegation comprising Samburu Central Sub-county Police Commander, Alex Rotich and contingent of police officers to Lparturk Sub-location where the minor was staying with her grandmother.

The 12 year old was sexually assaulted when two men broke into the house they were sleeping in before leaving her badly injured.

Another underage girl they were sleeping with in the same house was physically assaulted and is nursing bruises on her face.

Speaking during the rescue mission, Dr. Mutinda condemned the sexual assault on the child and called on the law enforcement authorities to ensure the culprits face the full force of the law.

“We have sought the consent of the girl’s guardians through the local Administration to transfer the child to a safe shelter where her wellbeing will be guaranteed,” said Dr. Mutinda.

The minor was later transferred to the Samburu Girl’s Foundation, whose Founder, Josephine Kulea, received her and pledged to accommodate and offer her a chance to continue with her studies.

The two rape suspects were arraigned at the Maralal Laws Court for gang-raping the 12-year-old girl a week ago.  Dr Mutinda urged the police to press additional assault charges on the suspects. The case is scheduled for mentioning on July 12, 2021.

A 2017 Report by the National Gender and Equality Commission on the drivers of Child Pregnancies in select counties among them Samburu, called on the Government to consider voting resources towards installation of rescue centers.

The shelters for the abused girls and boys and Gender Based Violence recovery centres will have capacity to also offer forensic laboratory services.
