The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has urged the youth to join the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to gain skills in various trades.
Raila said doing so would enable the youths to be self-employed by applying for credit from public and private lenders to establish their own businesses as job opportunities in the formal sector kept shrinking by the day.
The former premier spoke while commissioning a tuition block at Khwiliba primary school in Luanda constituency in Vihiga County funded by the National Government Constituency Development (NG-CDF).
He added that it is imperative that the government ensures universal access to education right from pre-primary to tertiary level.
The ODM supremo also urged the residents to turn out in large numbers and register as voters in the ongoing mass voter enrollment exercise.
“It is only by enlisting as voters that you will be able to participate in choosing your leaders during the forthcoming elections,” he observed.
Statistics indicate that the Western counties of Kakamega, Busia, Bungoma and Vihiga have over 1 million eligible people who have not registered as voters.
