Over 69 gambling machines impounded

KNA   Police in Tharaka Nithi County have impounded over 69 illegal gambling machines over the past two weeks.

            

Speaking to KNA after destroying the machines, County Police Commander, Charles Mbatu said that they have started an operation to confiscate illegal gambling machines in the county.

           

 “We have started an operation to get rid of all gambling machines. We will continue until we ensure this machines are no longer available in the county,” said the commander

            

He urged residents to refrain from engaging in such activities and to report anyone undertaking such illegal activities to the authorities.      He further asked parents not to allow their children to participate in the gambling games.

            

Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Ms. Beverly Opwora said that the unscrupulous businessmen are illegal and don’t have permits to run such businesses.

            

The CC observed that such activities have increased the number of theft in the county and has promoted idleness in the trading centers among youths.

            

She noted that the businessmen have started manufacturing the machines locally and further warned them to desist from the act adding that serious actions will be taken against them.

            

She urged the youths to engage in gainful activities that are in accordance with the law and that will benefit the county and the country.

            

“There are various projects going on in the county for example construction of roads, water and sewerage projects in Chuka and Chogoria where residents can go there and get jobs,” she advised.

            

She echoed the county commander’s words and advised parents not to allow their children to participate in such activities.

            

The CC revealed that many youths have sold their household items to enable them to use the money to gamble in hopes of winning quick cash.She assured that they will continue with the exercise until all the gambling dens are closed down.

            

Ms. Opwora thanked the security agents in Maara sub-county for the good job they have done in confiscating the illegal machines.      They are also cracking down on illicit brew joints and traders selling bhang.
