KNA The government will support all children from poor backgrounds who sat for the 2020 KCPE to transit to secondary level.
Speaking in Nyeri County today, Education Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Ms Mumina Bonaya said the government would ensure a hundred percent transition of primary to secondary is attained.
“Fees problem will not prevent young girls and boys from accessing secondary school education. The government will ensure all children from poor backgrounds get financial assistance,” she said.
The CAS visited informal settlements like Witemere and Majengo slums in Nyeri town to find out the situation of students who applied and were shortlisted for Elimu scholarship.
The vetting committee indicated that they selected sixty four students in Nyeri County to benefit from the Elimu scholarship. They however maintained that the rest of the applicants would be catered for by other available bursaries.
In total, the committee said that they received 169 applications for the scholarship within Nyeri.
Bonaya praised Elimu scholarship vetting committee saying they have done a good job by ensuring that all the students get financial consideration.
“Elimu scholarship is a government program aimed at assisting bright children from informal settlement,” the CAS explained
She however stressed that the scholarship is not the only support adding that the government has other forms of bursaries that could assist in payment of school fees.
She asked parents to seek fees assistance for their children from the government and other well-wishers.
