National assembly speaker Justin Muturi has called on all leaders seeking to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta to preach peace as they embarked on their campaign trail.
Speaking at Sega vocational training Institute in Siaya County, where he presided over a funds drive for Ugenya constituency small scale traders, Muturi said he is still in the race to state house, even as he called on free and fair competition.
“Competition is nice when we have many people, I am happy that you have welcomed me to Sega, and I would like to tell my good friend Raila Odinga that Mount Kenya is open for him and others to sell their policies,” he said.
However, the national assembly speaker was quick to add, “Before we elect leaders, first let us put them on the integrity scale and weigh them, as we should not elect leaders who will go and start trading with the positions.”
Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie speaking at the same event also called for peaceful campaigns and drummed up support for the UDA candidate Dr. William Ruto.
“The Deputy President believes in a government where everyone will be empowered and that is the slogan that we sell to all Kenyans to be part of us, in the past the leaders fought poverty, ignorance and diseases, in our generation we are fighting against tribalism that has let us down all that long,” he pointed out.
On his part, Ugenya MP David Ochieng sought to distance himself from malicious propaganda that was being spread against him for hosting Raila Odinga’s competitors saying the meeting was purely for development agenda.
“I welcomed the national assembly speaker knowing too well that he seeks to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022, I also know that Raila is contesting, however my aim is to ensure that our people grow; I will host everyone who will help me uplift my people, be it the former premier, I will not even hesitate to host Dr. William Ruto because the end result is to build Ugenya,” said Ochieng.
The event was attended by several leaders including the former police spokesman Charles Owino, Mbeere MP Muriuki Njangagwa and former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo among others.
Ochieng is the only MP who was elected on a different ticket (The Movement for Democracyand Growth) in Siaya County, where ODM enjoys political dominion, hence Raila Odinga’s backyard.
