Members of Kenya Medical and Practitioners Pharmacist Dentist Union workers (KMPDU) at Kitui Level 5 hospital have expressed concern over poor health services offered at health facilities in Kitui County.
The medics expressed concern on shortage of specialist, oxygen and poor working conditions in health facilities.
The KMPDU National Secretary-General Dr. Davj Bhimji Atellah while addressing media at the hospital Friday said that medics were unable to offer quality health care services due to shortage of specialists and poor working conditions.
The KMPDU members had planned to stage peaceful demonstrations to protest over the problems but their plans were cut short after goons they claimed were hired to cause chaos interfered forcing security officers to stop it.
“We had earlier planned to have peaceful demonstrations for the sake of the people of Kitui County since the health sector in this county is in ICU. There are no specialists in Kitui County Referral hospital who should be offering the needed services,” Dr. Atellah said.
The medics further regretted that patients were dying due to lack of oxygen as the entire Kitui Level 5 hospital has no oxygen.
“We are going to petition KMPDU council to investigate our concerns,” said the Secretary General.
Dr Atellal disclosed that the county does not have enough doctors and depends on doctors from other institutions for emergency.
“The county still has no required equipment to be used at the hospital and efforts to have them procured had been politicised.
Dr. Atellah also regretted that they have been trying to reach Governor Charity Ngilu over the issues in vain.
The KMPDU members are demanding for immediate response from the county government failure to which they would stage a demonstration next week Wednesday.
Efforts to reach the governor’s office for response over the allegations were fruitless as the county health minister was said to be away.
