Kisumu: Another Fuel Tanker Overturns, Police Block Locals from Siphoning Fuel

Hardly two days after a fuel truck was involved in an accident in Gem, Siaya county, another one has overturned at Kasagam flyover along the busy Kisumu-Nyamasaria road.

According to a report filed by K24 Digital, after the incident, the residents were already armed with jerrycans to siphon off fuel from the tanker, only to be impeded by police officers who were already at the scene. Luckily no casualty was reported.

The tragedy came barely two days after 15 people perished in a fire tragedy at Malanga trading center on the Kisumu-Busia highway on Saturday, July 18. At least 13 people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing medication.

The incident also left 31 other people, including children, nursing serious injuries; the victims were siphoning petrol from the overturned tanker when it exploded.

Among the casualties was a pregnant woman. Another one was a young mother who was burnt to death with her baby strapped on her back. The victims were rushed to Yala sub-county hospital.

A trailer, registration number KAV 768W, which was ferrying 20 tonnes of milk, avoided a head-on collision with the fuel tanker when the accident occurred.
