Kirinyaga governorship race tightens, narrows down to Ngirici, Kibiru and Waiguru

27 days to the 9th August 2022 general election, the previously crowded race for Kirinyaga County’s governorship has narrowed down to three top contenders.

According to the latest confidential opinion poll, attributed to the National Intelligence Service and seen by The County, the contest now has incumbent Anne Waiguru (UDA), Senator Charles Kibiru (Jubilee) and current Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici (Independent) as the frontrunners.

The survey places Waiguru and Ngirici in a tie lead of 31% while Senator Kibiru comes a close second at 24%.

Former governor Joseph Ndathi (TSP), Peter Gitau (Safina) and Bedan Kagai (NARC Kenya) polled at 4%, 3% and 2% respectively.

Peter Ireri (ANC) ratings are at 1% while undecided voters were 4%.

Kibiru’s quick gains appear to have upset a previously largely women~dominated race that had Waiguru and Ngirici as top contenders.

Azimio One Kenya Coalition Party presidential running Martha Karua was also a favourite for the seat before she was selected to deputize H.E. Raila Odinga in the State House contest.

The soft~spoken, smooth~operating Kibiru, a first time Senator, made history when he won his current seat in 2017 as an independent  candidate in a largely Jubilee County, making him the only independent Senator in the country.
