Kapkatet Seniors FC Sunday evening took home a grand prize of Sh1 million after they emerged winners of the second edition of the Kericho County annual football tournament.
The Club which comprises of youth drawn from Bureti Sub-County secured their 5-4 penalty kicks victory against International FC from Ainamoi Sub-County in the grand finale tournament held at Kericho Green stadium.
A host of leaders including Senators Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho) and Elgeyo Marakwet’s Kipchumba Murkomen joined thousands of residents who had jam-packed the stadium to cheer their favorite teams.
Other leaders who graced the sporting event included Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala and MPs Peter Kaluma, David Gikaria, and Nelson Koech.
Mr McDonald Mariga, a renowned footballer who became the first Kenyan to play for UEFA Champions League as a defensive midfielder also graced the tournament.
Mariga encouraged the youth to believe in their abilities and work on their skills to succeed in life.
Senator Cheruiyot who is the initiator of the tournament promised to continue empowering young people in the county to realize their full potential.
“It can be painful to lose on penalties but that is how the game is; you lose today, you win tomorrow. The runners, International FC, have grabbed Sh. 500,000 which is a good enough motivation for them,” said Cheruiyot.
The final was curtain-raised by a friendly match between Bunge FC comprising of parliamentarians and Kericho County Assembly FC which ended in a 5-4 win for Bunge FC on penalty kicks.
