Intervention measures to tackle social welfare of children from poor families

KNA  The Garissa county government is strengthening intervention measures for vulnerable youths and children in areas of nutrition, health, food security, water and Sanitation. 

The measures are contained in a memorandum of understanding signed today between the county government and a local NGO, Save The Children.

The MOU will see the county government and the NGO collaborating to strengthen intervention measures for local vulnerable adolescents, youth and children in areas of health, nutrition, food security, water, sanitation and livelihoods.

Save The Children has already committed Sh. 110 million to improve health and nutrition, child protection, education and child poverty for some 38,750 beneficiaries with focus on reaching specific communities and households where the need is greatest.

County Secretary Abdi Sheikh signed the MOU on behalf of the County Government and Kenneth Sisimwo, the Director for Programme Operations at Save the Children’s on behalf of his Country Director Yvonne Arunga.

Speaking during the occasion, Sheikh said the county government was keen to formalise co-ordination with partners for better implementation and monitoring of initiatives. 

He urged Save the Children to extend its support into other areas like developing model early childhood education centres and vocational training centres and also support Community Health Volunteers.

Deputy County Secretary Yusuf Yunis, Chief Officer Special Programmes Abdullahi Mohamed, Garissa Municipality CEO Abdinoor Ole Hussein and Director Donor Relations Mohamed Sahal led many other senior county staff in attending the ceremony.

In the Save the Children delegation were Moses Emalu – Humanitarian Manager, Frederick Omondi – Safety & Security, Enock Nyakundi – Livelihoods Adviser and Yusuf Gedi – Programme Manager.
