IEBC conducts public participation for residents

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in Tharaka-Nithi today Friday conducted a one-day exercise to educate residents on electoral laws they want to amend with the aim to streamline access to information ahead of the August polls.

Speaking to the media during a public participation exercise at the IEBC offices in Chuka, County Elections Manager (CEM), Mohamed Raka, said that the   Commission is working on streamlining some of the laws used in previous elections that will enable the public to have better access to information.

“For example, in the last elections, there was a presidential petition to open the server, with the changes we are about to make, now information will be readily available to the public during elections and stakeholders can get information easily,” he said.

The Elections Manager disclosed that the exercise will explain the changes the Commission will undertake in electoral laws to comply with the Constitution.

The exercise will also be an opportunity to inform the public about the changes in the elections laws, he said, adding that the Commission has invited different stakeholders to participate in the exercise.

“We have invited leaders from different parts of the county including Deputy County Commissioners from all the sub-counties in Tharaka Nithi as well as faith- based leaders,”   he said.

Raka revealed that the exercise will also create an opportunity to enlighten the public about the role of IEBC and their rights in the election process.

The Elections Manager further explained that it was important to get the opinion of the residents and leaders across the County to include their views in the amended laws.

Eligible voters are encouraged to continue verifying their details before the closure of the exercise at the end of this month.
