KNA Nyeri County Assembly yesterday approved a Bill that will see the establishment of an effective structure that will guide the handling of disaster and emergency services.
The Nyeri County Disaster Management Bill,2021 which is awaiting the Governor’s assent will enhance the capacity of the county government to effectively manage the impact of disasters and emergencies and in turn prevent loss of lives and destruction of properties.
The Chairperson of Gender, Social Services and Special Programmes Committee Patrick Mutahi said the Bill will ensure that action is taken to prevent or minimize threats to life, health and the environment from natural disasters and other emergencies.
He added that the Bill will ensure proper mechanisms are implemented to reduce the risk that may cause, contribute to or worsen disaster situations in the county.
“The government will also have a framework to effectively coordinate with other relevant agencies to mitigate the impact of disaster among others,’ said Mutahi.
The Chairperson said the county has in the recent past recorded many hazardous and emergency incidences that resulted in loss of lives, displacement and destruction of property which he believes could have been averted or handled differently if the bill had been in place.
