Gunmen raid Equity Bank in Matuu Town

Three Armed thugs raided Equity Bank in Matuu, Machakos County on Tuesday morning after injuring and disarming policemen at the Bank.

The gunmen stripped the police officers on duty off their guns, closed the doors and held customers hostage inside the Bank.

Five customers who were inside the Bank were robbed of their money and valuables and an unknown amount of money stolen from the teller.

Police Constable Dorothy Opili was injured on the left hip and left hand bruised and her AK 47 rifle with 30 rounds stolen by the thugs. Her counterpart, Patrick Omusebe, sustained bruises on both hands and his rifle was also stolen.

A witness stated that “there was a gun battle between the police and the thugs and one of them was shot in the arm as they escaped,”

The injured officers were rushed to Matuu Level Four Hospital in stable condition, while the police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects who used a motorcycle to escape.

The incident comes after two suspected robbers were lynched and killed in June, by an irate mob after they hijacked and stole Sh 350,000 from a woman in Machakos town, shortly after withdrawing money from the bank.

Boda Boda riders who noticed the incident mobilized each other and chased the suspects who were cornered at Lukenya in Athi Rriver Sub-County.
