KNA The fight against Gender-Based Violence in Samia Sub-county of Busia has received a major boost following the unveiling of a Gender Office in Funyula.
The facility was fully funded by the NG-CDF Funyula Constituency in an efforts by area Member of Parliament (MP). Wilberforce Mundenyo, to counter-Kangaroo courts that are on an alarming rise in the area as a form of arbitration.
According to Mundenyo, Kangaroo courts which are controlled by Chiefs and their Assistant are the major hindrance to justice to the victims of Gender-Based Violence and cases of teenage pregnancies.
“Let us emphasize the rule of law in administering justice in an appropriate manner using the right channels. The judiciary is the only institution with rights to serve justice to the victims,” said Mundenyo.
The Funyula MP, added that the people should advocate reconciliation after justice has been served and all parts are at peace.
He challenged men to speak out as they are mostly affected instead of resorting to alcoholism.
“The police won’t come to your bedroom and force you to speak, but it’s your right to stand up and say No ” to any form of GBV,” added Mundenyo.
Samia Sub- county Police Commander, Winnis Yele, said that police face the challenge in the fight against GBV due to lack of conducive environment saying victims do not like to visit police posts to share their grievances.
