The criminal Investigations department in Turkana County has launched investigations into an incident where a Radio journalist based in Baringo County is suspected to have been abducted at Kabarnet town and taken to Lodwar in Turkana Central.
Confirming the incident County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Peter Kimulwo said they received a report from a complainant by the name Geoffrey Kirui who identified himself as Alpha Radio Kenya presenter based in Baringo County and stationed at Pemwai in Kabarnet.
According to the CCIO, the incident happened on Sunday night while the victim was at his home at Kaprokonya estate in Kabarnet town after returning from work. “ He watched a movie up to 2am, went outside briefly and on his way back to his house he was confronted by three people armed with two AK 47 rifles who introduced themselves as police officers,” said Kimulwo.
He said the suspects forced Kirui to accompany them to a police station for investigations over an unknown offence and since he knew he was innocent, he obliged. “But on reaching the gate of the estate, he was forcefully ushered into an awaiting vehicle, a white harrier with no registration number,” he added.
Kimulwo said the Radio Journalist was asked several questions among them whether he knew certain politicians in the area and whether he had campaigned with them which he denied.
He confirmed that the suspects made away with Sh7, 000 which the victim had kept in his wallet and two mobile phones and also slightly injured him.
Kimulwo said they would liaise with the DCI officers in Baringo to take up the matter and establish the motive behind the incident and the identities of the suspects.
“Since the incident happened in Kabarnet in Baringo, we have done preliminary investigations and we are liaising with our colleagues in Baringo to take up the matter because I believe these are robbers,” said Kimulwo.
Speaking while reporting the incident at Lodwar DCI headquarters, Kirui said he was forced to take some liquid which he thought was water but it appeared to have been laced with some chemical as he lost consciousness immediately.
“I was eventually dropped at Kanamkemer estate in Lodwar on Monday at around 8.00 pm after I regained consciousness. The two armed men escorted me for about 20 metres and on nearing Safari Club in Kanamkemer estate, they ordered me to leave. I was helped by some boys who told me I was in Lodwar and not Marigat as I thought initially,”said Kirui.
Kirui suspected the incident was politically instigated to intimidate him and urged those behind it to honour freedom of the press.
