CS Matiang’i declares to discipline rogue police

KNA   Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Interior and National Coordination, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, has vowed to restructure the administration of Rioma Police Station after alleged use of force by some officers last month leading to the death of two people.

Addressing residents at Rioma Market in Marani Sub-county in Kisii, Dr. Matiangi, said that Marani Sub-county will have a new Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) by Monday next week.

“I will sweep this place (Rioma Police Station) and by Monday you shall have a new DCC,” Dr. Matiang’i said.

The CS also assured Kisii residents that he and other region leaders have agreed on how to work together to solve issues when they arise.

“Let me assure you that such incident will never occur here again,” Dr, Matiang’i added.

Kisii County Governor, James Ongwae, said Rioma residents came together to construct the Police Station to reduce insecurity in the region.

“We constructed this Station with our money and we wanted officers who will help the residents to be brought here,” Ongwae explained.

Inspector General (IG) of Police, Mr. Hillary Mutyambai, said that the police have done a great job at Rioma despite a few incidents that have caused a public uproar.

He also urged residents to support the police to carry out their duties as agreed between them and the community.

Earlier, Chairman for Rioma Bodaboda Association, Mr. Charles Miyogo, claimed that Rioma area has become a dangerous place to live because of the alleged harassment by police.

“We have a problem of living in this Constituency as if we are not Kenyans. A citizen here is fined Sh.5,000 for not wearing mask without being taken to court,” Miyogo said.

The CS was also accompanied by Nyanza Regional Commissioner, Magu Mitindika, Nyanza Regional Police Commander, Karanja Muiruri, Kisii County Commissioner, Alan Machari, Kisii Police Commander Francis, Kooli, Kitutu Chache North, Member of Parliament Jimmy Angwenyi and Sensi Area MCA, Paul Angwenyi.

This comes following the protest by Rioma residents after two people allegedly died at the hands of Rioma Police officers last month.
