Coronavirus is likely to increase in Luo-Nyanza Counties

KNA Despite efforts made by the National Government to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the
country majority of residents in Homa Bay county seem determined to contravene the
containment measures put in place.

A survey conducted by Homa Bay County Information Office during their three days covid-19 third wave sensitization campaign established that residents are still violating the set
protocols.

As the team went from town to town, one trading center to the next creating awareness among the community, they discovered that many people were also ignorant of the situation
of covid-19 in the county.

Some residents especially in trading centers were not wearing masks, others
wore them over their chins and some only after spotting security officers.

Many of the community members among them boda boda riders and local market traders and their customers had also not embraced social distancing and other MOH guidelines.

In the transport sector too, a number of matatu operators were also violating covid-19 rules by carrying excess passengers.

Once police were spotted, the excess passengers were transferred to boda boda riders
who ferried them across the road blocks and then they are pick up them after passing security points.

However, this attitude has caused fear of the virus soaring among leaders.

Led by former Bondo legislator Dr. Oburu Oginga and Ndhiwa MP Martin Owino, the leaders stated that the virus contagion was likely to worsen in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa-Bay and Migori  counties due to defiance by the local people to adhere to containment measures.

“Residents in the county are endangering their lives by not complying with the laid down
protocols,” Dr. Oburu asserted as he urged residents of Luo-Nyanza to strictly observe the public health guidelines to keep Covid-19 at bay.

The three days campaign which ended last Wednesday covered many towns, trading centers and villages in various Sub Counties including Homa Bay town, Kendu Bay, Ndhiwa trading center, Oyugis, Olare as well as Manga and Otaro villages.
