Evangelical churches from the larger Mt Kenya region have decried the recent move by a group of people to abandon Christianity and go back to the traditional way of worship, terming it as retrogressive.
Deliverance Church Overseer Bishop Mark Kariuki said the clergy will not allow society to degenerate under their watch and called on those Christians who have abandoned the church to repent and resume worshipping Christ proper.
Speaking at St Peters ACK in Nyeri Wednesday during a meeting for clergy drawn from eleven counties of Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Embu,TharakaNithi, Meru, Laikipia, Nyandarua, Nakuru and Nairobi, Kariuki noted that worshipping the traditional God “Mwene Nyaga” who is believed to live in Mt Kenya is outdated and some practices like Female Genital Mutilation are retrogressive.
Bishop Paul Wanjohi of the New Life Church echoed similar remarks saying that the trend is alarming noting that most young people in the region no longer believe in Jesus Christ but the God who was worshipped by the forefathers.
They also said they recognize the role the Christian missionaries played local communities and called on the community to reject every attempt to take it back to the traditional worship and practices.
They also maintained that Christianity is not a white man religion and Jesus is Messiah and Saviour of the whole world and urged the church to desist from mixing biblical doctrines with traditional religious worship.
The evangelical clergy also asked church leaders to desist from anointing leaders who do not ascribe to sound Christian faith but encouraged the church to preach the gospel of God without fear.
This comes after it emerged that some church elders are no longer going to church after going back to the traditional way of worshipping.
