Riots erupts paralyzing business in Eldoret

KNA Police in Eldoret Town were yesterday forced to use teargas to disperse rowdy Matatu operators who had blocked the main Uganda road citing high sticker fee and harassment by Uasin Gishu County Askaris among other grievances.

The demonstrating operators from Sosian Bus Park had to run helter-skelter disrupting normal business in the town centre after a combined force of the Police and the County Askaris cornered them. Several drivers and conductors were arrested.

Speaking to Kenya News Agency, Sosiani   Bus Park Chairman Paul Sonko   accused   the County Government of overcharging them saying they are forced to pay Sh2800 per year instead of the government’s recommended Sh1400 owing to reduced number of passengers carried by each vehicle to prevent coronavirus transmission.

The Chairman further accused the County Askaris of corruptly obtaining money from errant matatu operators instead of taking them to court

The incident that saw 19 vehicles impounded caused a heavy traffic snarl-up alon Uganda road that lasted for over an hour.
