Athletics Kenya urges counties to facilitate sporting activities

Athletics Kenya (AK) has urged county governments to invest in sporting facilities to enable the federation to tap more talents among the youth.

Speaking at Kerugoya Stadium during Central Region Cross-Country competition, Central region AK chairman David Miano said that the association is facing a lot of challenges in organising such events because of poor facilities.

Miano said when they arrived at Kerugoya Stadium they found the current state of the venue wanting.

“When we entered the stadium, we at first couldn’t figure out how the event would be, as the structure is not well managed,” Miano said.

He said they were forced to start by clearing the track for the athletes, by collecting stones and any other obstacles along the way.

“We had to remove stones and all other dirt to ensure the track is fit for competition. County governments should ensure these facilities are always managed well to enable federation to conduct successful activities as far as sporting talent is concerned,” he added.

Athletics Kenya was conducting a cross-country competition to select a team that will represent the central region in the national cross country scheduled for 22 January 2022 in  Eldoret.

On a positive note, Miano thanked the government for Riungu Stadium in Nyeri which is one of the best sporting venues in the central region

“We thank the National government for facilitating the facelift of Ruring’u stadium in Nyeri. It is an honour to have such facility in Central Region,”

“We also have a new Wang’uru Stadium which will provide a stage for more activities, not only athletics but also others like Football, Rugby and Basketball.
